Summer in the City – Outreach Opportunity

Several months ago, the Hampton Roads Outreach staff person for the Virginia Attorney’s General Office and the Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney approached us about setting up a series of community events that the faith community would host. The purpose was so that the faith community would become more engaged in their neighborhoods and communities to foster a better relationship and to bring neighbors, others churches and businesses together to build community.

We gathered a group of Pastors together of PBA Churches in Hampton and Newport News and other Pastors of non-PBA Churches. There was an overwhelming interest in taking the next step, thus in Hampton we have 6 Community Explosions “Summer In The City” set up with partnerships with PBA Churches, non PBA Churches, Hampton Office of Youth Violence Prevention, Hampton Police Department and of course the Attorney General’s Office.

Open Door Full Gospel Baptist Church is the host Church for the first community explosion being held at the North Phoebus Community Center and they welcome other churches in our network to come alongside them in this effort. Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Temple is partnering with the Colonial Landings Apartment Complex. Mount Calvary Baptist Church is partnering with New Life Church (Power Plant Pkwy). Buckroe Baptist Church is partnering the Skating Rink on Pembroke Avenue. Memorial Baptist Church is partnering with the Messiah Center on Pembroke Avenue. Langley Baptist Church is a host site and is reaching out to the Fox Hill area churches to come alongside.

Each of the host sites and the partnering PBA Churches would welcome your assistance with water, soft drinks, hot dogs, hot dog and hamburger rolls, or donations to cover the cost of food purchases. If your church or ministry would like to have a resource table utilize the link to register http://hampton.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=2465 .

If you have questions or want more information, feel free to contact the PBA Office, or call Charles Cheek at 757-602-9196
